PEDAL FOR PRIDE 2027
RIDER ASSUMPTION OF RISK, RELEASE OF LIABILITY, AND COVENANT NOT TO SUE

Participation and scope

I voluntarily choose to participate as a Rider in Pedal for Pride 2027, a five-day supported cycling ride scheduled for August 15 through August 19, 2027, traveling approximately 400 miles from Traverse City to Ferndale, Michigan.

For purposes of this agreement, the "Event" includes official training rides, meetings, transportation provided as part of the ride, cycling routes, rest stops, campsites, meals, equipment assistance, support-vehicle activities, and other activities organized as part of Pedal for Pride 2027. I understand that routes, schedules, lodging, transportation, and support arrangements may change because of weather, road conditions, safety concerns, availability, or other circumstances.

Released Parties

The "Released Parties" are Pedal for Pride; Ryanne Riegling, individually and in her capacity as the Event organizer; the Event's ride leaders, roadies, volunteers, support-vehicle owners and drivers; any sponsor or Event partner specifically identified in the registration materials as a Released Party, but only with respect to its involvement in the Event; and their respective agents, representatives, insurers, successors, and assigns where those roles or relationships legally exist.

Affirmations LGBTQ+ Community Center is the intended beneficiary of the Event. It is not an organizer or Released Party solely because it receives Event proceeds.

This agreement does not release claims against an unrelated motorist or other unaffiliated third party merely because an incident occurs during the Event.

Assumption of risk

I understand that long-distance cycling on public roads, trails, and shared-use paths involves inherent and other serious risks. These risks may result in bodily injury, permanent disability, death, property damage, medical expenses, economic loss, or noneconomic loss.

I knowingly and voluntarily assume the known and unknown, anticipated and unanticipated risks of participating in the Event, including:

  • Motor vehicles and the conduct of negligent, reckless, distracted, impaired, uninsured, or underinsured drivers;
  • Intersections, traffic signals, roads without shoulders, construction, potholes, pavement defects, gravel, debris, railroad crossings, trails, pedestrians, and animals;
  • Group riding, pace lines, collisions, falls, navigation mistakes, separation from the group, and route changes;
  • Heat, cold, rain, wind, lightning, poor visibility, exhaustion, dehydration, illness, and other medical events;
  • Bicycle, helmet, equipment, or mechanical failure;
  • Delayed or unavailable medical, mechanical, or emergency assistance;
  • Support vehicles, trailers, transportation, and bicycle loading or unloading;
  • Campsites, food, shared facilities, overnight activities, and the conduct of participants, volunteers, and third parties; and
  • Other risks arising from or related to my participation.

I understand that route planning, ride leaders, roadies, rest stops, support vehicles, and other Event support cannot eliminate every hazard, prevent every error, guarantee my safety, or guarantee immediate assistance.

Health and safety responsibilities

I am responsible for determining whether I am physically and medically prepared to participate. I will disclose information reasonably necessary for emergency planning, carry any medications I may need, and maintain health insurance that I consider appropriate.

I will provide a bicycle and safety equipment suitable for the Event, keep them in safe operating condition, wear a properly fitted helmet while riding, obey traffic laws, follow reasonable safety instructions, ride within my abilities, and stop riding when continuing would be unsafe.

Ryanne Riegling or a designated Event leader may modify my participation, require me to use a support vehicle, or end my participation when reasonably believed necessary for safety, health, serious misconduct, or the operation of the Event.

If I cannot communicate during an emergency, I authorize Event personnel to contact emergency services, provide reasonable first aid within their abilities, arrange transportation for care, and notify my emergency contact. I remain responsible for expenses associated with medical care or transportation provided to me.

Release of ordinary negligence

To the fullest extent permitted by Michigan law, I release the Released Parties from claims and liabilities for bodily injury, death, property damage, medical expenses, economic loss, and noneconomic loss arising out of or related to my participation in the Event, including claims caused in whole or in part by a Released Party's own ordinary negligence.

This release includes ordinary negligence involving route planning or communication, failure to identify or warn about hazards, ride supervision, group or pace decisions, rest stops, SAG and support operations, bicycle assistance, campsite or meal arrangements, emergency response, support-vehicle operation, and the acts or omissions of Event volunteers.

This release does not apply to gross negligence, willful or wanton misconduct, intentional misconduct, or other conduct that cannot legally be released. It applies only to the Released Parties identified above.

Covenant not to sue and final terms

To the fullest extent permitted by law, I agree not to sue a Released Party for a claim released by this agreement. This agreement is binding on me and my estate, heirs, personal representatives, and assigns to the extent permitted by law.

Michigan law governs this agreement. If any provision is found unenforceable, it will be limited or severed only to the extent necessary, and the remaining provisions will remain effective.

This agreement contains the complete understanding concerning assumption of risk, release of liability, and covenant not to sue for the Event. Electronic signatures and electronically retained records are intended to have the same effect as originals.

I understand that this agreement includes an assumption of risk, a release of claims including claims based on ordinary negligence, and a covenant not to sue. I have read it before signing, had the opportunity to ask questions, and understand that I may choose not to participate.

PEDAL FOR PRIDE 2027 ROADIE — ASSUMPTION OF RISK, RELEASE OF LIABILITY AND COVENANT NOT TO SUE

Event and voluntary participation

I voluntarily choose to participate as a Roadie or support volunteer in Pedal for Pride 2027, August 15–19, 2027, a five-day supported cycling ride on a planned Traverse City-to-Ferndale journey. For this agreement, the Event includes related meetings, transportation arranged as part of the Event, support-vehicle travel, route and roadside rest stops, overnight stays, camp activities, meals, setup and breakdown, equipment handling, and other organized Event activities.

In consideration for being permitted to participate and receive Event support, I enter into this agreement knowingly and voluntarily. This Roadie release applies to my non-cycling support role. If I also participate as a Rider, I must separately execute the Rider agreement.

Released Parties

The Released Parties are Pedal for Pride; its Event organizers, ride leaders, roadies, volunteers, support-vehicle owners and drivers; sponsors and Event partners to the extent they provide Event services; owners and operators of property or campgrounds used for the Event; and, where those roles or relationships legally exist, each of their officers, agents, representatives, insurers, successors, estates, and assigns. Affirmations LGBTQ+ Community Center is the Event beneficiary and is not included as an organizer or Released Party solely because it is the beneficiary. Claims against motorists or other unrelated third parties are not released merely because an incident occurs during the Event.

Roadie and support risks

I knowingly and voluntarily assume all known and unknown, anticipated and unanticipated risks of Roadie and support work, including driving support vehicles; riding as a passenger; loading and unloading bicycles, coolers, trailers, and other equipment; lifting and carrying; roadside rest stops; working near traffic; campsite setup and breakdown; food preparation and food handling; outdoor conditions; slips, trips, falls, and physical exertion; vehicle collisions; negligent, reckless, distracted, impaired, uninsured, or underinsured third-party drivers; acts or omissions of participants, volunteers, and unrelated third parties; delayed or unavailable emergency assistance; and other Event risks.

I understand that Event planning, instructions, rest-stop locations, ride leaders, and support vehicles cannot identify or eliminate every hazard, prevent every error, guarantee my safety, or guarantee immediate medical or other assistance.

Health and safety responsibilities

I represent that I am physically and medically able to perform the support activities I undertake safely. I am responsible for my health decisions, medications, personal medical expenses, and maintaining health insurance that I consider appropriate. I will work within my abilities, use appropriate equipment and lifting practices, follow traffic laws and reasonable ride-leader, campground, food-safety, and vehicle instructions, and stop an activity when continuing would be unsafe.

If I am unable to communicate during an emergency, I authorize reasonable first aid, emergency medical assistance, transportation for emergency care, and notification of my emergency contact. I understand that the Released Parties do not guarantee that medical personnel, emergency transportation, or other assistance will be immediately available. I remain responsible for costs of care provided to me.

EXPRESS RELEASE OF ORDINARY NEGLIGENCE

TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY MICHIGAN LAW, I RELEASE AND FOREVER DISCHARGE THE RELEASED PARTIES FROM CLAIMS, DEMANDS, CAUSES OF ACTION, DAMAGES, LOSSES, AND LIABILITIES FOR BODILY INJURY, DEATH, PROPERTY DAMAGE, MEDICAL EXPENSE, ECONOMIC LOSS, AND NONECONOMIC LOSS ARISING OUT OF OR RELATED TO MY PARTICIPATION IN THE EVENT, INCLUDING CLAIMS CAUSED IN WHOLE OR IN PART BY A RELEASED PARTY’S OWN ORDINARY NEGLIGENCE.

THIS EXPRESS RELEASE INCLUDES ORDINARY NEGLIGENCE IN SUPPORT OR SAG OPERATIONS; REST-STOP PLANNING; CAMPSITE, MEAL, OR OVERNIGHT ARRANGEMENTS; EQUIPMENT LOADING, UNLOADING, OR ASSISTANCE; SUPERVISION OR INSTRUCTIONS; EMERGENCY RESPONSE OR DELAYED ASSISTANCE; SUPPORT-VEHICLE OPERATION; AND ACTS OR OMISSIONS OF VOLUNTEERS.

This release does not apply to gross negligence, willful or wanton misconduct, intentional misconduct, or any other conduct that Michigan law does not permit to be released. It applies only to the defined Released Parties and does not release an unaffiliated motorist or other unrelated third party from that person’s own conduct.

Covenant not to sue and final terms

To the fullest extent permitted by Michigan law, I covenant not to sue a Released Party for a claim released by this agreement. This agreement is intended to bind me and, subject to confirmation by Michigan counsel, my estate, heirs, personal representatives, and assigns. Michigan law governs this agreement. If a provision is held unenforceable, it will be severed or limited to the minimum extent necessary and the remaining provisions will continue in effect.

This agreement is the entire agreement concerning assumption of risk, release of liability, and covenant not to sue for my Roadie role and supersedes prior discussions on those subjects. Changes must be in a writing agreed to by the participant and Pedal for Pride. Electronic signatures and electronically retained counterparts are intended to have the same effect as originals. I have had the opportunity to read this complete agreement, ask questions, and decide whether to participate.

PEDAL FOR PRIDE 2027
COMMUNITY EXPECTATIONS

Pedal for Pride is a small, team-supported ride rooted in LGBTQ+ community, shared effort, and respect. Over five days, riders and roadies will spend a lot of time together on the road, at rest stops, in support vehicles, and at shared campsites. These expectations help create a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable experience for everyone.

By participating, I agree to:

Put safety first
  • Follow traffic laws and reasonable instructions from ride leaders and roadies.
  • Ride predictably, communicate hazards, and avoid behavior that puts others at unnecessary risk.
  • Speak up when I need help, rest, transportation, or a change of plan.
  • Respect decisions to adjust the route, schedule, pace, or participation when conditions require it.
  • Not ride or drive while impaired by alcohol, cannabis, medication, or another substance.
Treat people with respect
  • Respect participants' names, pronouns, identities, backgrounds, abilities, boundaries, and lived experiences.
  • Help maintain an environment free from harassment, discrimination, intimidation, bullying, and unwanted sexual attention.
  • Address disagreements directly and respectfully when possible, and involve an Event leader when support is needed.
  • Respect personal space, belongings, sleeping arrangements, and the privacy of others.
Contribute to the team
  • Arrive prepared and on time for departures, meetings, and assigned responsibilities.
  • Help with reasonable shared tasks such as loading, cleanup, campsite setup, meals, and rest stops.
  • Communicate changes, concerns, injuries, or delays promptly.
  • Treat riders, roadies, hosts, campground staff, motorists, and members of the communities we travel through with courtesy.
Represent the ride thoughtfully
  • Remember that participants may be seen as representatives of Pedal for Pride and its mission.
  • Avoid conduct that could reasonably jeopardize the safety, dignity, or reputation of participants, the Event, Affirmations, or an Event partner.
  • Obtain permission before sharing sensitive personal information or photographs taken in private or vulnerable settings.

If a concern arises, Event leaders will ordinarily try to address it through a direct and respectful conversation. Serious, repeated, or unsafe conduct may result in modified participation or removal from the Event. Safety concerns may require immediate action.
